The Daily 5 - Our Literacy Programme

Here we are doing the Daily 5. Look at the pictures and tell your whanau what is happening in each photo.

We learn our spelling words here during Word Work.

What do you like best about Word Work?

This is Work on Writing. What are you writing about at the moment?

Julius is doing Read to Self, and Niko is happy doing Listening to Reading.

We have these plumbing pipes called Phonics phones. What do they do?

We like to find wee nooks to read listen to books on our devices.

Check out those great spelling words!

Can you read Niko's words upside down?

Dannel looks like he is engrossed in a great book.

Miss Eyre also has a great library of her own that we all love to borrow from. This has been especially helpful while our building project is going on.

Meet one of our resident scientists - Jacob

Jacob was given a really cool science book with lots of experiments in it from his Grandparents. He wanted to show the class an experiment.

Tell your family what he did.

Here is his equipment. What did he need?

Here are the instructions that he typed out.

Here is the new science vocabulary that we have learned today. Tell your whanau (family) your new words.

What did Jacob do first?

Why did he have 2 dishes?

We waited half an hour, and what had happened to the half of the potato that was sitting in the water and the salt?

Here are the results!

It was so interesting to see what had happened!

We decided to take the experiment further by adding more salt and water to one half, and just water to the other, and we are leaving it over the weekend. What do you predict will have happened after 48 hours?

Here is Jacob showing us the results. Tell your family what happened?

Skateboard tricks

Here's our stunt man Connor, with one of our skateboard instructors, Aiden. Don't try this at home! :)

Dr Seuss' Birthday

Happy birthday, Dr Seuss! Well, you would be 111 if you were still alive. But we did honour the author today by dressing up as his characters. Here are all of our Cats in Hats.

Look at our Star Bellied Sneetches!

Nikita was the clover from Horton Hears A Who. How creative. That's some green hat thinking right there!

Here are some of our Things.

Fox in Socks popped in for a visit.

Dannel was the boy in The Lorax who will speak for the trees.

And I was Thing 102, as Mrs M.R was Thing 101. We figured there would be a few Things around the place.

Two Grinches, the Lorax and Horton showed up, too.

Along with The Cat in the Hat and Red Fish, complete with her bowl.

Here comes trouble...

We had a great parade with the whole school, then it was back to Rooms 12 & 18 for some more fun.

We played Pin the Hat on the Cat, which gave us lots of laughs.

We read a selection of Dr Seuss books while eating... Hop on Pop-corn!

Two Things popped out of Nicole's troublesome hat during the fun.

We also enjoyed some creative writing with Dr Seuss sentence starters. In Mrs Aalbers room we did some maths in the form of tallying up all of the costumes from all of the books. We made Green Egg biscuits. To finish off the afternoon we watched a short movie from The Wubulous World of Dr Seuss. Phew, what a day.

Home Learning and Sharing

Last week it was the Baha'i holiday of Ayyam-i-Ha, which is a celebration of hospitality and giving. Manasa's mum came in with popcorn for everyone, and Manasa shared what the day meant to him. He also came in with cupcakes a day later. Thanks for sharing your faith with us Manasa and family!

We were most thankful.

Havana has bought in a very funny and interesting book which is an encyclopaedia of all things immature. She showed us some of the cool things in her book.

Look how funny she is!

We are talking a lot about Tiny Houses (usually a whole house made up of just one room), and Connor, Manasa and Yashv decided to design and make a house out of this math equipment. How creative.

Han came in today and showed me his English book of learning. He can speak 2 languages fluently. Miss Eyre can only speak one! I will have to have some lessons from Han (and Connor and Jonathan) so that I can learn some more Chinese from them.

Our resident scientist, Nicole, made some edible glitter last night. Ask her how she made it.

I love all the home learning going on in Room 12. Keep your eyes posted for this Friday as Jacob is bringing in a science experiment to share, too.
